Babb Orthodontics
Celebrates First Year in Mt. Lebanon
E
ven though her Mt. Lebanon practice has only been open a little
over a year, Dr. Lisa Babb of Babb Orthodontics already feels
like a part of the community—thanks in large part to the warm
welcome she has received from locals and patients.
“I’m grateful to feel this welcomed in Mt. Lebanon,” she says.
“Everyone has been so warm and accommodating. As a new business
owner, that’s been really encouraging for me.”
Central to Babb Orthodontics’ business model is treating patients
as people, not numbers. “We’re not a factory,” notes Dr. Babb, who
spends focused, one-on-one time with each new patient, helping
them understand their orthodontic issues, explaining their treatment
plans, and answering questions. Patients have noticed the difference.
“People tell me that they like the intimacy of my practice—that it’s
more boutique than most offices,” she says.
Dr. Babb completed her undergraduate degree at Pitt summa
cum laude in biology with a minor in chemistry. From there, she
went on to the university’s dental school as a recipient of the highly
competitive Dean’s Scholarship. She completed her orthodontic
residency at the prestigious Virginia Commonwealth University, one
of the most elite programs in the country, and was immediately hired
by a practice in the North Hills.
But Dr. Babb always knew that opening a private practice was
in her future. The stars aligned in 2015, when an office space came
available on Washington Road. After a sleek remodel—some of it
completed by her and her friends and family—Babb Orthodontics
opened its doors in May 2016.
In the last year, Dr. Babb has added new technologies to the
practice to better serve her patients. The most important addition
was a 3D Intraoral Scanner that eliminates the need for plaster dental
molds—a messy and time-consuming practice (that patients don’t
love, either)—and replaces them with a 3D scanned image.
Babb Orthodontics works with patients of all ages, from kids to
adults. Dr. Babb advises parents to have their children first evaluated

by age 7 in order to
address any issues
that can be alleviated
before they turn into
harder-to-address
problems later on.
“Seeing a child at
age 7 doesn’t mean
every 7-year-old
needs treatment,” Dr.
Babb notes. “But there are orthodontic issues that—if we can catch
them early on—make life a lot easier when adult teeth come in.”
Babb Orthodontics uses 3M orthodontic products, which are
engineered to eliminate common problems with braces such as
excess cement on the teeth. Also available are clear braces, Invisalign
and more. Every product or treatment plan Dr. Babb uses is what
she would use with her own family, she says, adding that she also
understands the cost that orthodontic work adds to a family budget.
“I know how expensive orthodontic treatment can be, so we
work really hard to make it affordable,” she explains. “We offer many
payment options, discounts for paying in full, and payment plans. We
work with almost all insurance companies, and are happy to check
anyone’s orthodontic benefit for them.”
Babb Orthodontics also is one of the few practices in the area that
accepts UPMC for You and UPMC for Kids state insurances.
Advocating for patients is one of Dr. Babb’s strong suits, and people
find her office to be immediately welcoming, from the beverage bar
that serves up water and hot chocolate for kids and coffee for parents,
to the beanbag chairs and video games in the waiting room.
“My goal is to make people comfortable. I want kids, teens and
adults to ask questions without fear of being judged,” she says. “When
they come here, we’re discussing their teeth and correcting issues
that they may be self-conscious about. Coming to an orthodontist
for the first time can be intimidating
and I try to dispel those fears as soon as
people come through the door.”
