Babb Orthodontics
A New Practice in Mt. Lebanon
O
rthodontist Dr. Lisa Babb has roots in Mt. Lebanon. Her
great‑grandparents lived in Virginia Manor, and it’s where her
father spent part of his childhood. So when she decided to
take a chance and start up a completely new orthodontic practice,
Dr. Babb knew Mt. Lebanon was where she wanted to be.
It was a bold move — most orthodontic practices are turned over,
with existing doctors selling their patient base to the next generation.
But Dr. Babb took a leap of faith, deciding that the opportunity to
offer the South Hills her vision and expertise by way of a brand‑new
practice was the way to go, and that decision has been well‑received
by the patients who are eager to see what she brings to the table.
A self‑described dental “nerd,” Dr. Babb has never shied away
from the academic rigors of her career path. She completed her
undergrad at Pitt summa cum laude with a degree in biology and
minor in chemistry. She then went to the University of Pittsburgh
Dental School on the highly competitive Dean’s Scholarship, and
was accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University’s orthodontic
residency program — one of the most elite programs in the country.
Upon completion, Dr. Babb was immediately hired by a practice in
the North Hills, but always knew that private practice ownership
was what she wanted. This May, Babb Orthodontics officially opened
the doors to new patients, and a new chapter began for Dr. Babb
professionally.
Taking on patients of all ages, Babb Orthodontics caters to both the
younger and older demographics who may need orthodontic work.
Dr. Babb advises that parents have their children first seen by age 7
in order to address any looming issues that can be alleviated before
they turn into harder‑to‑address problems later on.

“Seeing a child at
age 7 doesn’t mean
every 7‑year‑old
needs treatment,”
she explained. “But
there are orthodontic
issues that, if we can
catch them early on,
it makes life a lot easier when adult teeth come in.”
Advocating for patients is one of Dr. Babb’s strong suits, and people
find that her office is completely welcoming — from the beverage bar
that serves up water and hot chocolate for kids and coffee for their
parents, to the bean‑bag chairs and video games in the waiting room.
“My goal is to make people comfortable and to be welcoming.
I want kids and parents to be able to ask questions in a safe place
without fear of being judged,” Dr. Babb said. “I see everyone as
individual, unique people. When they come here, we’re discussing
their teeth and correcting issues that they may be self‑conscious
about. Coming to an orthodontist for the first time can be
intimidating and I try to dispel those fears as soon as people come
through the door.”
Dr. Babb uses 3M orthodontic products, which are engineered to
eliminate the common problems with braces such as excess cement
on the teeth. She also provides clear braces, Invisalign and more.
Everything she uses or does is what she would do for her own family,
she notes, adding that she also understands the cost that orthodontic
work adds to a family budget.
“I know how expensive orthodontic treatment can be, so we work
really hard to make it affordable,” says Dr. Babb. “We offer many
payment options, discounts for paying in
full, payment plans, work with insurance
companies, and we are one of the few
orthodontic practices in the area taking
‘UPMC for You’ and ‘UPMC for Kids’ state
insurances.”
