t. Lebanon is home to the newest party spot in
the Pittsburgh area—LumberjAxes. Located at
1689 McFarland Road across from the Dormont
Pool, the business idea came together after cousins
Corey Deasy and Matt Peyton and their childhood friend, Jack
Welsh, were introduced to competitive axe throwing.
“Corey’s sister attended a team-building event in Philadelphia
featuring axe throwing and knew immediately we would love
the idea,” says Welsh. “So Corey and I took a few days off from
work, drove to Philly and absolutely loved the concept. We
were hooked.”
The trio opened their flagship location in Millvale next to Grist
House Craft Brewery and quickly focused on the South Hills for
expansion.
“We got such positive feedback that it was a no-brainer,” Welsh
explains. “We found the perfect spot in Mt. Lebanon, which
eliminates the need for many of our customers to travel too far or
go through tunnels to find us. We opened our doors in October
and people are loving it.”
LumberjAxes is open to participants with any skill level
who want to try their hand at the cutting-edge entertainment
phenomenon. The expert staff aims to provide the ultimate
axe-throwing experience for groups of friends, families,
private parties, team-building events, and leagues. They also
book bachelor and bachelorette, gender reveal, holiday and
theme parties.
Equipped with six lanes and 12 targets, the Mt. Lebanon
location also includes a corporate meeting room for special
events and will eventually incorporate “Cosmic Axes” to its list of
fun activities.
While axe throwing may seem like an extreme way to have
a good time, LumberjAxes, a member of the National Axe
Throwing Federation, adheres to rigorous safety regulations and
creates a fun, welcoming atmosphere for adults of all experience
levels—from old hands to newbies—encountering their inner
lumberjacks for the first time. It provides all the axes you can
throw, along with experts to instruct on proper technique
and safety.
“We wanted to create an alternative to the typical party
night,” says Deasy, who also founded the region’s first Escape
Room business. “We’re proud to have introduced axe throwing
to Pittsburgh, but we’re not going to stop there. We’re always
thinking of new ways to enhance the experience. And we know
Pittsburghers will be game to try whatever we dream up.”
LumberjAxes participants must be at least 13 years old and
an adult must accompany those under 18. The cost for group
sessions is $35 per person for a 2.5-hour block, and throwers
can book in advance on the website.
“Our location is BYOB and we offer mini-refrigerators to keep
beverages cool while things heat up in the throwing area,” adds
Welsh. “We’ve also partnered with Mineo’s Pizza for our guests
who may want to enjoy a slice while they’re waiting their turn to
throw. Just place an order with them and they’ll deliver directly
to your lane.”
The future looks bright for these Pittsburgh natives who
have ventured into the world of extreme fun, and they already
have their sights set on a third location. “We haven’t narrowed
down the location quite yet, but we know it will happen. For
now, though, we are very happy with the warm welcome we’ve
received in the South Hills and look forward to meeting our
guests and showing them how much fun they can have at
LumberjAxes,” says Welsh.
