He arrived by train at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, and trained with the infantry on the use of rifles, bayonets and participated in maneuvers. Private( Pvt.) Steitz was later assigned to the Army Air Corps, for a year and earned his wings as a pilot. He was later reassigned to the infantry in Arkansas.
Pvt. Steitz was transported across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary and served as a rifleman in Company I, 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division in the Army. His unit entered France after the Normandy invasion and fought in skirmishes, taking towns in France and Belgium. The unit was shelled – Pvt. Steitz suffered burns from the white phosphorus from the shells. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, in Germany, where he was wounded, taking shrapnel in his back. In 1945, he served in the campaigns of the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. Pvt. Steitz received an honorable discharge in 1946.
GENSTEIN NAMED OUTSTANDING SPEAKER
Shady Side Academy senior Nathan Genstein of Mt. Lebanon was named the Outstanding Speaker in House Congress, effectively the state champion in that event, at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League( PHSSL) State Tournament, held at Bloomsburg University this spring. Nathan was one of four members of the Shady Side Academy Speech & Debate Team who competed at the state tournament.
FAIRWAY SWINGERS WELCOMES GOLFERS
The Fairway Swingers women’ s golf league is underway for the season. The group meets every Thursday morning at Mt. Lebanon Golf Course from April through September. Golfers of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Marcia at marlyntay @ gmail. com.
HARMONY SINGERS LAUNCH NEW SEASON
The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh, a South Hills choral group, will launch its 2017-2018 season on Tuesday, September 5, at 7 p. m., with an open house and ice cream social for returning and prospective members. The event will take place at the Brightwood Christian Church Social Hall, 5044 West Library Road, Bethel Park. Weekly rehearsals are held at the church during the concert year.
The Harmony Singers have been entertaining for more than 50 years. They perform a wide variety of music: Broadway, rock‘ n’ roll, patriotic and pop tunes. The group is available to perform for civic, social, church or business organizations.
New members are welcome to join the Harmony Singers. All voices are needed.

‘ JOY OF CHRISTMAS’ CRAFT SHOW RETURNS
The DeMarillac Guild of St. Louise de Marillac Parish in Upper St. Clair will sponsor its annual“ Joy of Christmas” Craft Show on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. The show will present 121 artists and crafters to be located in the school and LeGras Parish Center. It will also feature a Bake Sale / Candy Sale and a Chinese Auction, and lunch and snacks will be available. Admission is $ 2 and includes a ticket for the Chinese auction.( Due to the order of the USC Fire Marshal, strollers are not permitted.) ■
