Allegheny Health Network’s Jefferson Hospital Jefferson Hospital designated a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care Knowledge is power: DEXA scans predict your potential for fractures and osteoporosis Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has designated Allegheny Health Network’s Jefferson Hospital a Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care. The Blue Distinction® Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns categorized as early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. “We are proud of this designation for Jefferson Hospital,” said Allan Klapper, MD, Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Allegheny Health Network. “It is a reflection of the exceptional expertise, dedication, compassion, and teamwork displayed by our women’s and infant care providers.” Additionally, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield designated the following Allegheny Health Allan Klapper, MD Network facilities as Blue Distinction® Centers + for Maternity Care, part of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program: West Penn, Forbes, and Saint Vincent hospitals. These designations are the latest recognition for the quality of AHN’s women’s and infant care. AHN is rated the #1 health system for women’s health quality in western Pennsylvania and among the top 6 percent nationally for quality women’s health care, according to Comparion® Medical Analytics, 2016 National Quality Rating Database. A simple, painless radiology exam called a DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan can detect these conditions early and, in some cases, can help you and your doctor construct a plan to prevent them from getting worse. Using an extremely low dose of radiation, DEXA scans are so sensitive, they can detect as little as 1 percent bone loss in the spine, hips, and extremities. Although osteoporosis most common in postmenopausal women, anyone older than 40 may be at risk. If you are a smoker, have poor nutritional habits, don’t exercise, or have a family history of osteoporosis, a DEXA scan is very important to determine your level of risk. Allegheny Health Network now offers DEXA scans at Bethel Park Health + Wellness Pavilion, Jefferson Hospital, Brentwood Professional Plaza, Jefferson Medical Arts Building, and the Waterfront Medical Building.
