n 1929, a Mt. Lebanon resident, whose day job was a buyer
for a Pittsburgh department store, became the curator of a
traveling, one-painting museum that was able to reach the
eyes of millions. Mrs. Wade McClarin of 125 Central Square
bought a painting done by Henry Ault, who was identified in
news reports as a “New England painter.” Titled “The Shadow
of the Cross,” McClarin’s painting depicted Jesus standing at
