The Fort Pitt Block House: 250 Years of
Pittsburgh’s Oldest Architectural Landmark
7 p.m., Thursday, June 12
The Fort Pitt Block House is the oldest
architectural landmark in Pittsburgh, and
2014 commemorates the 250th anniversary
of its construction in 1764. Built as a defensive
military redoubt, it is the last surviving structure
of Fort Pitt, a key British fortification during the
French and Indian War. The presentation will
discuss how and why the Block House was built
and what its original purpose was in relation
to the fort. Other areas of the Block House’s
history will also be explored including its years
as a private dwelling during the 19th century,
its restoration and preservation by the Fort
Pitt Society of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, and its escape from destruction
by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the early 20th
century. The program will be presented by
Block House curator Emily Weaver who recently
published a history of the Block House in honor
of its 250th anniversary. Copies of her book,
The Fort Pitt Block House, will be available for
purchase and signing following the program.
