LEBANON PUBLIC LIBRARY CALENDAR OF EVENTS ERIK LARSON TIE-IN EVENTS IMAGINING THE FUTURE: AMERICA AND THE WORLD FAIRS OF CHICAGO AND NEW YORK 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 Board members of the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon will share the history of the 1939 New York World’s Fair as well as the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. This talk is a lead-in to the Erik Larson author visit on April 29 and relates to Larson’s book The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. Presented by the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon. AMERICAN IMPRESSION: CABARET 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 24 Directed by Bob Fosse, this 1972 musical stars Liza Minelli as a female club entertainer in Weimar Republic-era Berlin who romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them. Based on Christopher Isherwood’s memorable novel, The Berlin Stories, this insightful film foreshadows the rise to power of Hitler and is a visual companion piece to Larson’s In the Garden of Beasts. GARDEN TOUR AND PARTY STARDUST SWING: PRE-TOUR GARDEN PARTY 7 p.m., Saturday, July 13 Enjoy a night under the stars at Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s pre-tour Garden Party. The library’s lovely garden is the setting for entertainment, desserts, cocktails and wine. Tickets are $30 and will go on sale in the spring. (Event will be held inside if it rains.) AMERICAN IMPRESSION: MEET ME AT THE FAIR 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17 Art historian Elaine Wertheim will discuss the art exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exposition and how painters such as Edmund Tarbell, William Merritt Chase, and Childe Hassam used the vocabulary of French Impressionism to create works that captured American life at the end of the 19th century. Like Larson’s The Devil in the White City, this program will enrich your understanding of The Gilded Age and the development American culture.
