Khruschchev in the Middle East: How
the Cold War Shaped the Current Crisis
7 p.m., Wednesday, March 2
During the Cold War, the two
superpowers—the U.S. and the Soviet
Union—stepped into the Middle East to
replace the vacuum left by the colonial
powers. The Soviets initially sought
to wield influence through newly
independent Israel, but upon Stalin’s
death, Nikita Khrushchev broadened
his scope to the so-called non-aligned
nations, the Third World.
Supporting pan-Arab nationalism and
quasi-socialist policies, while proclaiming
an anti-colonial message, the Soviets
nurtured relationships with Gamal
Abdel Nasser’s Egypt and Syria. Through
economic and military aid, the Soviet
Union used Egypt and, to a greater extent,
Syria as its foothold in the Middle East.
Speaker Dr. Joshua Andy is an expert
on Soviet military and foreign policy in
the Khrushchev era and has published
several articles on Soviet history. He has a
Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham’s
Centre for Russian and East European
Studies and has taught at Washington
& Jefferson College and Penn StateBehrend and is currently an Associate at
Pitt’s Center for International Studies and
teaches history at Winchester Thurston
Upper School. Presented by the Historical
Society of Mount Lebanon.
