As a breast radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging , Sarah Thomas , DO , is excited to get the word out about how the renovated breast center is better serving the South Hills .
What does the expansion project mean for patients and the community ? We now have the ability to support a higher volume of patients . With three mammogram rooms and two ultrasound rooms , we can get more patients in sooner and provide them with results faster . We ’ re alleviating the anxiety of waiting and reducing the time between screening and diagnosis .
What are some of the latest screening and diagnostic technologies used in breast care ? We perform 3D mammograms in addition to guided biopsies and MRI evaluations for high-risk patients . We also calculate a patient ’ s Tyrer-Cuzick score , which assesses the 10-year and lifetime risk of developing breast cancer for all screening mammograms .
I don ’ t have a family history of breast cancer . Should I still get an annual mammogram ? Yes , it ’ s still important to get screened ! The goal of screening mammograms is to catch cancers when they ’ re small and haven ’ t spread , which makes treatment less complicated .
