INDUSTRY INSIGHT AUTO INSURANCE SPONSORED CONTENT MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES: INJURED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION M aking the Right Choices. If you have sustained injuries in a motor vehicle collision, your first concern should be your safety and taking care of anybody who has been injured. If your car is drivable, get off the roadway and call 911. In most areas, if you call 911 and report a motor vehicle collision, the police will come to the scene. In some areas, if both cars are drivable and no one is injured, the police will classify the incident as “non- reportable” and they will not come to the scene. • • • • • AT THE SCENE: • If the police come to the scene, allow the police to gather the necessary contact and insurance information. • Obtain the contact information from the police officer, including his name, badge number and department. • Obtain the incident number for the police report. • If the police do not come to the scene, take a photograph of the other driver’s license, registration card, and insurance card. • Verify the driver’s license is for the person who was driving the vehicle. • If the other driver tries to leave the scene without producing information, try to obtain the license plate information and a description of the vehicle. Then call in this information to the police. • Be careful about what you say at the scene. Many people who are injured respond to questions at the scene that they are not injured. • If you are injured, tell any police officer or EMT you are injured. If you are not sure whether you are injured, tell them you are not sure. • If you are in doubt about whether you are injured, ask for an ambulance to come so that you can be checked out by the EMTs. GATHERING EVIDENCE: • If there are any witnesses to the collision, try to obtain their name, address, and phone number. • Take photographs of the scene and the vehicles. • Take note of the weather conditions, road conditions, or any other unusual conditions regarding the collision. MEDICAL TREATMENT: • If you are injured, go to the nearest emergency room to get checked out. • Do not be concerned about medical bills. Your initial bills will be paid by the car insurance for the vehicle in which you were either a driver or a passenger. • Be sure to tell any healthcare provider who treats you for your injuries that your injuries are the result of a motor vehicle collision. • Report the fact that you were injured to the insurance company for the involved vehicle so that a claim can be opened to pay your medical bills. • By law in Pennsylvania, the minimum amount of insurance coverage that is available for treatment of your injuries is $5,000, regardless of who is at fault. DEALING WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES: • Before you talk to insurance company representatives, it is highly advisable to contact an experienced personal injury law firm like ConboyLaw, LLC.
