Jefferson Hospital welcomes 1,000th baby
Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Jefferson
Hospital marked a significant milestone this
spring with the birth of its 1,000th baby.
Owynn Bradley Amari, son of Jon and
Christa Amari, was born on March 29,
delivered by Erica Brooke Smith, MD, of
Jefferson Women’s Health. Owynn’s birth
not only was a joyous occasion for the
couple. It also was cause for celebration
by the hospital staff, marking the 1,000th
baby born at the obstetrics center since its
opening in November 2014.
Jefferson’s Women and Infants Center was
the first new OB unit in the state in more
than 30 years. It opened when a dozen
obstetrics departments in western Pennsylvania had closed their
doors, leaving women with very few places to receive quality
maternity services.
“Allegheny Health Network delivered on a promise to bring muchneeded pre- and post-natal and obstetric care to women close
to home with the opening of the Women and Infants Center at
Jefferson Hospital,” said Louise Urban, President and CEO.
“We looked forward to this exciting new addition for a long time.
Bringing obstetrics services to the women of our community at a
beautiful facility with the latest technology and many amenities is
an achievement of which we are very proud.”
Jefferson’s obstetrics unit provides state-of-the-art Labor, Delivery,
Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP) suites designed for women’s
comfort, where the entire birthing process takes place. Each LDRP
is fully equipped with a birthing bed, bedside fetal monitoring
equipment, medical gases, infant warmer, and equipment
needed for infant resuscitation and stabilization. Centralized fetal
monitoring provides constant surveillance of the mother and baby.
The unit also features a continuing care nursery for special needs,
two dedicated cesarean-section rooms, 24/7 obstetric anesthesia
and newborn services, numerous patient services and amenities,
the latest infant security technology, and Austin’s Playroom.
David Logan, MD, Medical Director of Obstetrics, delivered
Jefferson’s first baby on Nov. 18, 2014 to parents from McKeesport.
Sixteen months later, Dr. Logan was in the hospital to welcome
the 1,000th baby. He said the community’s response to the new
obstetrical services in the underserved areas of Pittsburgh’s South
Hills and Mon Valley has far exceeded expectations, as 500 births
were projected for the first year.
Allan Klapper, MD, Chair, AHN Obstetrics and Gynecology, said
the obstetrics unit has brought a new era of exceptional and
compassionate care for the region’s women and their families.
“Women now have an option not to leave the area to deliver their
babies,” he said. “They have the highest quality physicians providing
general OB-GYN, as well as the most sub-specialized services –
minimally invasive gynecology, high risk obstetrics, gynecologic
oncology, urogynecology, and menopausal management – in their
own community in a modern and personalized setting.”
Jefferson’s OB program continues to grow and expand its services,
including an office in Clairton, and participation in a program that
provides safe, new cribs for those who can’t afford them.
“Our goal is to give mothers and babies the best start possible
toward a rewarding and healthy life journey,” Dr. Logan said.
