Repairing unstable shoulders for good .
When someone dislocates their shoulder , the tissue attached to the rim of the shoulder socket that helps keep the ball of the joint in place , known as the labrum , often tears . “ Once that happens , the capsule , which is attached to the labrum becomes looser . After that , the shoulder will keep dislocating over and over again , creating bone loss ,” said Dr . Akhavan .
Prior to 2017 , there were only two options for repair . One procedure has a high rate of retear , the other increases risk of developing arthritis . Dr . Akhavan led his team in the development of the Labral Scaffold Procedure to fill the gap when someone has bone loss . “ It fills the area of bone loss with a dermal graft ,” he said . “ The great thing about it is that it ’ s minimally invasive , and it restores the mechanics of the shoulder permanently .” Dr . Akhavan and the team at AHN have been doing the procedure since 2017 , with great results . If you or a loved one suffers from frequent shoulder dislocations , ask your doctor if a Labral Scaffold Procedure at AHN is right for you .

Sam Akhavan , MD , isn ’ t just the Director of AHN Orthopaedics Sports Medicine , AHN Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship , and AHN Othopaedic Research . He ’ s also the orthopaedic physician for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds .*
“ I enjoy taking care of athletes and younger patients who are highly motivated to get back to their lives and their sports activities . It ’ s very fulfilling to be able to restore that ability for them ,” Dr Akhavan said . “ One of the big things about Allegheny General Hospital is that we make a point of being out in the community , whether it ’ s Saturday morning walk-in clinics , coverage at local high school football games , local sports coverage for rugby and frisbee , all the way up to professional sports .” One of the big things for Dr . Akhavan personally is making sure patients know all their alternatives , both surgical and nonsurgical . “ If they have the same information their physician does , they can make an educated decision about their care .”
