Part of the reason for the astounding growth was a decision to purchase the old Airport Ice Arena, now known as The Landing, and convert it into a community-oriented facility open to everyone, not just church membership. “The Landing is unique in that it’s owned and operated by Impact Christian, but it’s open to everyone Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings,” said Bill Balbach, Associate Pastor. “It’s absolutely free to come, and has an indoor turf field, full-service cafe, kids play area and opportunities for people to rent private rooms for birthday parties, business meetings and other functions.” Impact, in fact, bought The Landing because they outgrew their previous worship facility, but rather than pursuing a larger space simply for weekend services, the congregation deliberately sought out a location that would offer more to everyone. In the two years that they’ve been operating The Landing, thousands of people have used the space for fun and recreation. “We have sports teams practicing here, businesses holding meetings here. It’s been pretty popular within the airport area, and we’ve continued that commitment to community by adopting our theme for this year—‘Love the Burgh’—which basically translates to ‘be a blessing to your community,’” Balbach said. “We try to accomplish that through The Landing as well as the myriad of other projects we take on here in the community.“ And that community is a global one, not just local. Thanks to a burgeoning population of Brazilian congregants, Impact has adopted a community in Brazil and built a church there. Future goals include sponsoring all of the children of that church’s community to provide their basic needs, such as food, water and tuition. Closer to home, Impact sponsors a Mega Kids Camp, Fall Festival, Clothing Swap and more. “We have a lot of amazing people here who have a heart for the area. We build houses for the less fortunate here at home, two in Butler County and one in Penn Hills, as well as take on larger projects around the world,” Balbach said. “And the people who want to be a part of this continues to grow. We have about 700 people attending weekend services each week and a growing, dynamic kids program for children aged birth through fifth grade.” For more information on Impact Christian Church, including the most up- to-date service times, go to the website at impactpittsburgh.com.
