‘ My Laundromat ’
My Laundromat has the dirt on celebrity musicians … figuratively speaking . When big-name musicians come to perform at the Pavilion at Star Lake , they often send their runners to My Laundromat to get their duds washed . There have been so many famous musicians that the owner , Marge , has stopped counting .
But most of the people who go to My Laundromat are just regular , everyday people who want to do their weekly wash in a clean , safe , friendly setting with good prices .
When Marge and her husband , Greg , opened the laundromat in 2010 , they had no experience in the laundry business . But Marge had worked in different businesses and Greg had worked as a selfemployed electrician for years , so he was well-equipped for fixing the machines — a bonus that Marge says has saved them thousands of dollars . She tries to pass that savings on to customers . It also means that the machines are almost always in working order because there is no need to wait for a technician to show up .
There ’ s a good crew of employees at My Laundromat who hustle , keeping the laundromat clean and in good order . It ’ s also not unusual for them to carry laundry to the car for folks who need help .
Almost immediately after a renovation to the laundromat that really made an impression on customers , Marge and Greg had to add six more washers and four more dryers . They ’ ve since expanded to three spaces in Essex Plaza , adding large washers and dryers that will handle large bulky items such as comforters . One man said it was the secondbest laundromat he had ever visited . Marge asked him , “ So who ’ s the best ?” And the man replied , “ My mom ’ s laundry room .”
My Laundromat ’ s Wash , Dry & Fold service is a real help to people who travel for their jobs , and those catching flights at the Pittsburgh
airport . If receiving the clothes before 10 a . m ., the staff can generally get the laundry finished the same day . The clothes are sorted , pretreated , and washed in top-brand detergents , including dye-free for those with allergies . And since the laundromat is open 24 hours a day , 365 days a year , customers can pick up their laundry at any time from convenient lockers using a code . There ’ s no rushing around to get to the laundromat before closing .
A frequent world traveler recently commented that My Laundromat has the easiest system of any laundry he has ever used . And at just $ 1.50 per pound for the service , you don ’ t have to be a world-famous musician to enjoy the convenience of having your laundry done for you . Marge says , “ Our customers are our celebrities .”
If you decide to stick around and do your own laundry , there ’ s a soap vending machine , a utility sink , an ATM and a change machine , plus plenty of free parking . Most of the washers and dryers also accept credit cards .
Marge understands that laundry may be a chore , but feels that it doesn ’ t have to be a dreary experience . “ The best part is the people ,” she says . “ When my beagle was accidentally hit by a car , I had to bring him to work while he recovered . Everyone was so concerned — asking about him , even praying for him … We get to know people and it ’ s like a little community , with people from all over the world .”
