American Cancer
Society Relay For Life
Involves the Entire
Community in the
Fight against Cancer
People gather together in more than
5,000 communities nationally to help fight
cancer at a unique event called Relay For
Life. Relay For Life (RFL) is the American
Cancer Society’s signature activity that
brings together teams of families and friends
from local companies, schools, clubs and
organizations to walk around a track while
celebrating the survivors who are with them,
remembering those who have lost their battle
and fighting back against this disease. All
proceeds raised from this event are used for
cancer research, and programs and services
provided by the American Cancer Society.
The Relay For Life of Pittsburgh West will
be held at West Allegheny High School on
Friday, May 9 – Saturday, May 10, 2014. The
committee and fundraising teams are hoping
to raise $48,000 for the American Cancer
Society. Two days and one night will be filled
with activities, entertainment, delicious food
and emotional ceremonies.
Two of the highlighted ceremonies during
this event and all Relays are Survivor and
Luminaria. The Luminaria Service will begin
at dusk on May 9. During this time, white
paper luminaria bags will line the track with
glowing candles inside. Each bag represents
a person and their journey with cancer.
Participants decorate the bags with stickers,
photographs and markers. While poems are
read or songs are played, participants and
community members walk the track taking
time to honor each bag displayed.
This year’s Survivor Celebration will be
held on the morning of Saturday, May 10,
