The owners of the Bright and Beautiful flower shop, Lynne and Susan Scott, were nonplussed by the request, which came by way of the Rolling Stones’ stewardess, but leapt into action to fulfill the priority-one request. The floral arrangements requested were to be mauve, blue and pink in order to match the plane’s interior, which was decked out with a living room, meeting room, bar, bedroom and multiple bathrooms. Whether or not the interior design was truly a concoction of the Rolling Stones is unknown, but we do know the plane had been chartered by Neil Diamond prior to the Stones’ acquisition of the jetliner. The Scotts, who speculated that they were chosen because they specialized in unusual flowers, not only fulfilled the request, but were assured they would be utilized by the band during any future tours that came through Pittsburgh. Whether or not that came to fruition was highly uncertain. The tour in question – the Steel Wheels Tour – was a revival tour for the Stones, who had been dormant for seven years. Because of the age of the band at the time, the tour was mockingly renamed the “Steel Wheelchair Tour.” But the Stones ultimately had the last laugh because not only did the tour prove to be the most profitable rock tour of the time, but it was also one of the largest tours of the time, spanning the U.S., Europe and Japan. ■
