The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is a nature escape close to home and yet it feels a world away. The vibrant colors of the gardens and the calm of the forest are interrupted only by the sounds of birds. The quiet of the woods reminds us to be still and see the beauty of nature that exists beyond our phone screens.

One way to enjoy the beautiful surroundings is with Yoga in the Garden by the Lotus Pond. Certified instructors lead sessions to improve flexibility and strength in peaceful surroundings.
Forest bathing is another unique activity to experience nature. It’ s not an actual bath, but a sensory immersion in the natural world that’ s all about awareness and focusing on the sights and sounds of the forest at a slow, leisurely pace.
For something more lively, visit the exhibit by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics, entitled“ Momentum.” It vibrates with color, featuring two kinetic sculptures that transform the Lotus Pond and the Garden of the Five Senses into a dynamic display.“ Momentum” will be open through the rest of summer.
Children can enjoy a three-day cooking camp for ages 7 to 11. Kids will learn about edible plants and how they’ re grown, harvested and used in cooking. Each day comes with outdoor exploration games, stories and preparing lunch.
Late in July there will be a Garden Party Camp for ages 4 to 8, celebrating the botanic garden’ s 10- year anniversary with themed games, a tea party and puppet show.
There’ s also Storytime and Crafting in the Garden for ages 3 to 6. Children discover nature through inspiring stories and fun crafts! There’ s no pre-registration for this activity and it’ s included in the daily admission price.
