With “Love Where You Live” as their motto and with their core values of Dignity, Important vs. Necessary, Socialization, Choices, and Service, Apple Blossom’s staff prioritizes the personal dignity of the residents above all, and emphasizes independence and socialization throughout every interaction. Wendy Jack, Community Relations Director for Apple Blossom, said empowering residents to have a voice in their care and community creates a more active and vibrant atmosphere for everyone, and is a unique quality of Apple Blossom. “My mother and aunt were diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer’s, so I know first hand how important it is to make sure people are heard so that their needs are met,” she said. Executive Director Doreen Bufalini said staff are trained to listen carefully to residents so that their emotional and spiritual needs are met as well as their day-to-day needs. “Every interaction is important at Apple Blossom, so much so that they may sometimes take precedence over the necessary day-to-day duties of our jobs,” she said. “The work will always get done, but if someone needs you in the moment, that moment is the most important moment of the day as far as we’re concerned.” In addition to the interpersonal connections, Apple Blossom encourages a robust social schedule for all residents to help them recover from personal losses or depression issues. “We have an activities director who plans a monthly calendar of events for residents,” Jack said. “There’s exercise every day, bus trips on our community bus where residents can go to the symphony, the casino or presentations here at the community. Entertainment is brought in. There’s also a beauty salon, activity room, chapel, movie theater - so much right here on site to keep people engaged, busy and happy.” Apple Blossom also emphasizes nutrition as a key to healthy and happy living and has an experienced chef on staff to plan daily menu options. “We routinely consult with licensed dieticians for nutritional guidance and our chef locally sources as many food options as possible to provide an appealing and nutritious menu for everyone,” Bufalini said. “Once we’re up and running, we also plan on sharing our dining facilities with the general public so everyone can taste the difference.” And, for residents who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, Apple Blossom’s Varietas Memory Care program is second to none. Staff learns about your loved one to comfort and connect with them in a warm and nurturing environment and employs the award-winning Behavior-based Ergonomics Therapy (BBET) system, a personalized, non-pharmacological therapy for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
