MONROEVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL
This year’s Monroeville Jazz Festival took place on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Tall Trees
Amphitheater in Monroeville Community Park.
The event began at 4:30 p.m. with The Funky Fly Project—a high school student funk
and jazz group from Pittsburgh that has already received national attention—starring
Winston Bell, Henry Schultz, Brandon Terry and Eric Dowdell Jr.
The local headliner began at 6 p.m. with Pittsburgh jazz icon Etta Cox. Cox, originally
from St. Joseph, Missouri, has been a popular performer in Pittsburgh and across the
country for many years including appearances on Broadway.
The night’s national headliner began at 7:30 p.m. with the return of Yamaha Piano
Master Tony DeSare and Quartet. Yamaha shipped a $124,000 grand piano on a flatbed
truck for his use. DeSare is a jazz singer, pianist and songwriter who performs throughout
the United States, and in many other countries around the world including Australia,
Japan and Hong Kong.
The festival’s partner was the Epilepsy Foundation of Western & Central PA. For more
