MEGAN MCCAFFERTY
HONORED WITH
HIGHEST AWARD IN
GIRL SCOUTING
a Girl Scout’s time, leadership, creativity
and effort contributed to making her
community better.
Girl Scouting’s highest awards—the
Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards—are a
girl’s chance to make a lasting difference
in the world.
For Megan McCafferty, a junior at
Gateway High School, “going
gold” means earning the
highest achievement—
the Gold Award.
This award,
presented to Megan by
Girl Scouts of Western
Pennsylvania, recognizes girls in
grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate
extraordinary leadership through
sustainable and measurable Take
Action projects that address important
community needs.
As a Girl Scout member for 10 years,
Megan is a Girl Scout Ambassador of
Troop 50316. She was supported in her
Gold Award effort by Ed Gage, Kerry
E. Black, Dr. Rev. Mike Trenga, Janet
McAndrews and Frank Stackiewicz. Her
project began in January 2017, and will
be completed in May of this year.
Megan interviewed U.S. veterans
from World War II, the Korean War, the
Vietnam War and Desert Storm. She
gathered their stories and put them into
a book titled “Freedom is Not Free, a
Compilation of Veterans’ Stories,” for the
general public.
She felt compelled to make this her
project because many veterans’ stories
that need to be remembered are lost
because the veterans do not often
share them, or they pass away before
doing so. They have fought for our
country and Megan feels they should be
acknowledged more for their service.
Upon graduation, Megan plans to
attend Slippery Rock University to major
in Secondary Education.
