Monroeville Historical
Society Has Significantly Updated Its Website
Like many groups, the Monroeville Historical Society( MHS) started with a small website with general information about the history of the area. Since that first online venture in 2005, the society’ s website has grown, changed and advanced. Today, it contains over 1,000 historical photos that span the years, from the mid 1880s to the current day. They are arranged in categories for easy browsing.
The site also has more than 30 formal publications in digital format. These publications, in the form of complete books and shorter articles, were written by MHS members— most notably Louis Chandler, the society’ s historian and archivist. Topics range from general history, pioneering families and significant houses in Monroeville, to articles covering how streets got their names, three operational airports, area coal mining, local industry and historic timelines. These publications not only cover Monroeville’ s history, but also the history of the surrounding communities.
There is a section on maps, with links to more than 40 historical maps and aerial images of the area. Most notable on this page are links to historical map overlays. These older maps have been placed on top of current online maps that allow you to zoom in and out, and change the transparency of the historical map to see how current roads and other points of interest match up. This section will continue to be expanded with new maps periodically. There are also companion maps for some publications. These will allow for a better understanding of where the areas discussed are or were located.
The MHS website is also fully searchable. Each page, publication and photo is indexed to allow both simple and advanced searches to find information quickly and easily.
Information on Old Stone Church rentals, current events and joining the society can also be found on the MHS website. All the information on the website is available free of charge and all documents are available for download. The society is also interested in any historical photos of
the local area that can be placed in the archives. Photos would be digitally scanned and the originals returned. Visit the site at monroevillehistorical. org for more information, or find us on Facebook. By Jason Beam

It was the McGinley family homestead for many years and has been restored to reflect the life and times of the early settlers. The McCully Log House was moved to this site in a project of the historical society, the municipality and individuals. The houses are located on McGinley Road, past the Forbes Regional Hospital across from LifeCare of Pittsburgh. By Marilyn Wempa
