into AI literacy , looking into deep fakes , images , and how to responsibly use AI .
Currently , students are being tasked with creating image classification programs , using tools like ‘ Teachable Machine ’ and “ Scratch ’. The task began by selecting two distinct objects to classify , such as lemons versus limes , cats versus dogs , or pens versus pencils , to address challenges like assisting colorblind individuals in distinguishing between similar items .
Students gathered and labeled data to train the Teachable Machine model , ensuring it could accurately differentiate between the chosen objects . Once trained , they transitioned to Scratch , where they programmed a simple app that made predictions based on the AI ’ s classifications . The process involved creative problem-solving and technical skillbuilding as students tackled the complexities of AI and its real-world applications .
“ With this project , what they take away from it is that AI makes decisions , but in making those decisions , there still has to be human interaction . Ultimately what I want students to take from the course in its entirety is a general understanding of how AI works . The amount of data it takes to use AI , both through training the AI and the sensors , there ’ s so much data that ’ s involved ,” said Sample .
“ Throughout the entire course we talk about the ethics of AI and ethically programming things in a way that is fair to all stakeholders . Even with a project like this , they have to look at the ethics behind it – who are the stakeholders , what ’ s important to each stakeholder and is this AI meeting this particular ethical model .”
As the class eventually transitions into deep fakes and AI literacy , Sample stressed the importance of this , knowing that AI is rampant online . As the world continues to change , understanding what is real and what isn ’ t will be important in order to be a good digital citizen , Sample said .
“ We try to teach the ethics of good and bad uses of it and the implications — the ethics of real versus fake ,” said Sample . “ Just understanding deep fakes on all avenues , the idea of being able to pick out what is real and what isn ’ t , whether it ’ s in their daily lives , on their social media accounts or wherever — it ’ s everywhere .”
