Article by Nancy H. Dalverny Monroeville Arts Council News Springing into “J ust where am I able to get art lessons from popular artists in the area?” is a question frequently asked by art enthusiasts. There is no official art center in the town, to pay an artist for private lessons can cost a minimum of $25 per hour, and to take serious art lessons one may need to travel out of town to a teaching art center that can be as far as Greensburg, Latrobe or New Kensington. The Monroeville Arts Council has a solution! Local persons of any ability interested in learning from award-winning local artists have a fabulous opportunity to learn from the pros again this year. Every spring and fall, an Educational Outreach Workshop is offered in the Monroeville Public Library Program Room. These outstanding offerings are held at no charge for instruction (with only a $10 materials fee assessed for non-members of MAC) and are geared to enlighten all those attending, regardless of artistic abilities or experience. Enrollment for each of these events is limited to 24 persons. Registration begins one month prior to each event date. Landscape painting using acrylics will be the topic on March 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., as Bob Bickers guides learners with tips and strategies to achieve a realistic landscape painting. On October 19, Pamela Price will offer her “Exploring Watercolor” painting class for all interested persons. All materials needed are provided during these sessions. A popular venue for children is the annual Kids’ Art in the Park. It will be held on June 8 at Monroeville Municipal Park West, Pavilion #5, where children and families can participate throughout the day from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Membership in Monroeville Arts Council (a 501(c)(3) organization) is the key to supporting these and other events, including the July summer concert series, Gateway High School Senior Awards, and a Sunrise School Outreach.
