Have you ever wondered how your property taxes are calculated? One important part of that is something called tax millage. It sounds like a big word, but it’ s actually pretty simple once you break it down.
What Is Millage? The word“ millage” comes from the Latin word mille, which means“ thousand.” In property taxes, one mill means you pay $ 1 in taxes for every $ 1,000 of your property’ s assessed value.
Example: If your home is worth $ 100,000 and your total millage rate is 10 mills, you would pay:
( 100,000 ÷ 1,000) × 10 = $ 1,000 in property taxes. Millage is just a fancy word for a tax rate.
Taxes are based on the assessed value, not necessarily what you could sell your property for.

Different parts of your community needed funding to operate efficiently in 2025:
Millcreek Township( 3.8037 mills) Millcreek Fire( 0.8 mills) Erie County( 6.61 mills) Millcreek Township School District( 16.7412 mills)
Each group decides how much money it needs for the year. Then, they set a millage rate to collect that money from all the property owners in the area. This rate is based on the total value of all properties in the township. If the township, county, or school district need more money for services, the millage rate might increase.
Your Township. Your Home. Your Community.
Millage affects how much you pay in property taxes each year. It also helps pay for important services in your community— like clean parks, safe schools, libraries, street paving and snow plowing, fast emergency response from the police and fire departments, and so much more.
Understanding your tax bill helps you know where your money goes. If millage goes up or down, your tax bill changes, even if your home’ s value stays the same.
