TEST FREQUENTLY Smoke alarms should be tested monthly , and batteries should be replaced at least once a year . For carbon monoxide alarms , testing should also be monthly , with a replacement every 5-7 years .
COVER YOUR ENTIRE HOME Install smoke alarms in every sleeping area and on every level of your home . For carbon monoxide alarms , place them outside each sleeping area and on every level , especially near sleeping areas .
INCREASE YOUR RESPONSE TIME Smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 50 %. When a smoke alarm sounds , you have just 3-4 minutes to escape safely , so having functioning alarms is crucial .
COMMON SOURCES OF CARBON MONOXIDE Carbon monoxide ( CO ) is produced by common household items , such as gas stoves , fireplaces , and furnaces . Properly installed and maintained CO alarms can detect this odorless gas , alerting you before it reaches dangerous levels .
