INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP 2024
On the morning of Saturday , September 21st , Bridger Park off Zimmerly Road , buzzed with community spirit as 18 dedicated volunteers participated in an extension of the 2024 International Coastal Cleanup . Together , they collected an impressive 23 bags of litter , totaling 258 pounds , from the banks of Walnut Creek .
The event was organized by Community Relations and Sustainability Director Jessica Stutzman and the CRS Department , who meticulously coordinated walking routes , managed the distribution of supplies , and oversaw the final tally of collected debris . “ Every piece of litter we pick up helps protect our waterways and the environment we cherish ,” Stutzman said . “ It ’ s inspiring to see our community come together for such an important cause .” illcreek

The International Coastal Cleanup is a global initiative aimed at removing litter from coastlines and waterways around the world . In the greater Erie County community , the impact was even more significant , with a remarkable 1,000 volunteers coming together to collect a staggering 4,000 pounds of litter .
Walnut Creek , which meanders through Bridger Park , ultimately drains into Lake Erie . This vast body of water then flows into Lake Ontario via the iconic Niagara Falls , and after a lengthy journey down the St . Lawrence River , it reaches the Atlantic Ocean .
The efforts of the volunteers in Millcreek highlight the importance of every cleanup , no matter how small . Each piece of litter removed contributes to the health of local water systems and countless other communities downstream . Together , these small actions ripple out , making a big difference in the fight against pollution .
