AVOID GETTING BURNED

BY A HEATING CONTRACTOR THIS WINTER illcreek

MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP NEWS
Cold weather can put a strain on your furnace and you could unexpectedly find yourself in need of an emergency heating contractor for repairs or a replacement system this winter . The Better Business Bureau ( BBB ) is warning consumers to be cautious about misleading heating contractors who may use high pressure scare tactics to convince homeowners to purchase expensive and sometimes unnecessary repairs and parts .
When looking for a heating contractor , BBB recommends :
Verify registration . The Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act requires all contractors , including HVAC contractors , who perform at least $ 5,000 worth of home improvements per year , register with the Bureau of Consumer Protection of the Pennsylvania Attorney General . To find out whether a contractor is registered with the Office of the Attorney General call 888-520-6680 or visit attorneygeneral . gov .
Compare prices and service packages . Search local heating contractors for free on BBB . org and compare companies ’ ratings and complaint history . BBB suggests that you inquire about any trip fees , diagnostic fees and overtime rates prior to contracting with a company , as these fees will vary . Get at least three estimates for any heating repair , maintenance or replacement . All bids should be in writing and should provide a full description of the services to be provided .
Review warranty coverage . Find out if the company you are considering offers any type of warranty or guarantee . Make certain you understand the terms and conditions of the coverage . Also , be sure to check the warranty on your current furnace to determine whether any repairs or replacements may already be covered .
Understand your rights regarding payment . If you end up having to replace your heating system , never pay for the job in its entirety or with cash . The law states for a contract of more than $ 5,000 , a contractor cannot accept a deposit in excess of 1 / 3 of the contract price , or 1 / 3 of the contract price plus the cost of special order materials . Whenever possible , pay by credit card and request receipts .
Recognize red flags . Some dishonest contractors may try to claim that your system is leaking dangerous gases that could explode or poison those inside the house , or recommend repairs and replacements that are not actually needed to convince you to waive your 3 day right of rescission . Take the time to get a second opinion . Be cautious of contractors who try to pressure you into signing a contract immediately or claim that no contract is needed .
