Does your child know how to use the 911 system?
According to the Federal Communications Commission( FCC) about 70 percent of 911 calls are placed from mobile phones each year, and the number only continues to grow. This is different from years ago when most calls were placed from a landline. Although most 911 calls today are now traced, it is still important for your children to know your street address and phone number. They will need to give this information to the 911 operator.
Walk your child through the steps on how to dial 911 on your mobile phone more than once, while explaining to them examples of when they may need to dial 911. Examples could include: someone in the home fell and isn’ t waking up, or, an adult that was with them became injured. Keep in mind when working with your child it is important to teach them during a fire their first priority is always to get out and go to your family meeting spot or a neighbor’ s house to dial 911.
The more you practice the easier it will be for your child to remember those steps in an emergency situation! Make sure your children know that even though they shouldn’ t give personal information to strangers, it’ s OK to trust the 911 operator. Explain that the operator will ask questions to send help for your emergency. Some questions might include;“ Where are you calling from?”,“ Who needs help?”,“ Is the person awake?” Explain that it’ s OK to be frightened in an emergency, but it’ s important to stay calm, speak slowly and clearly, and give as much detail to the 911 operator as possible. If they are old enough to understand, also explain that the emergency dispatcher may give first-aid instructions before emergency workers arrive at the scene. Make
EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER FALL 2017 it clear that your child should not hang up until the person on the other end says it’ s OK, otherwise important instructions or information could be missed.
Always refer to the emergency number as“ nine-one-one”( 9-1-1) not“ nine-eleven”( 9- 11). In an emergency, a child may not know how to dial the number correctly because of trying to find the“ eleven”( 11) button on the phone. Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the street so that police, fire, or ambulance personnel can easily locate your address. If you live in an apartment building, make sure your child knows the apartment number and floor you live on. Keep a list of emergency phone numbers for your kids and / or babysitter to easily find.( The refrigerator is a great place) This should include police, fire, and medical numbers as well as a number where you can be reached, such as your cell phone or work number. In the confusion of an emergency, calling from a printed list is simpler than searching on the internet to try and find the correct number. The list should also include known allergies( especially to any medication), medical conditions, and insurance information. Keep a first-aid kit handy, however away from smaller children who may want to play with it. Make sure your children and babysitters know where to find it. When kids are old enough, teach them basic first aid.
