Helping People Move F
When riding bikes on sidewalks and bike paths , keep in mind that pedestrians have the right-of-way . Bikes are not permitted on sidewalks in a business district or where there is a bike-only lane available . All traffic signals must be obeyed ; however , if a traffic signal does not detect your bicycle , you may proceed through the intersection after yielding to all intersecting vehicle and pedestrian traffic . Drivers are supposed to give bicyclists four feet of space when passing .
If you are a motorcycle rider , you already know how relaxing , fun , or even thrilling a ride can be . You ’ re probably also inherently aware of the dangers .
The proper protection can save a life . The best hope for overcoming a potentially serious crash is protecting your brain with a helmet . Pennsylvania requires any person who operates or rides a motorcycle to wear protective headgear unless they are 21 years of age or older AND have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for more than two calendar years . Riders who complete a motorcycle safety course approved by PennDOT may be eligible for exemption . Gloves , face and eye protection , the proper shoes and clothing can all help riders stay safe on the roadways . Safety checks of mirrors , lights , signals , the break , clutch and throttle are important before each ride .
Staying alert and following posted speeds and safety signals can save lives . Giving yourself plenty of space between other riders and vehicles gives you more time to react to circumstances . Be sure to avoid any obstacles like potholes , wet or icy surfaces or tire scraps .
Regardless of whether you are on a bike or motorcycle , your safety – and others – depends on riding drug- and alcohol-free . Substances impair your judgment , and it is just as important for you to be sober when riding . If you plan to make stops that include a drink , consider designating a sober ride home ahead of your adventure .
Drivers also play a role in cyclist safety . Drivers should be cautious when pulling out , turning and changing lanes . Looking twice can prevent accidents and improve roadway safety . Maintaining safe following distances and giving the adequate 4-foot buffer when passing cyclists are all small roles drivers can play in keeping roadways safer for everyone .
