Millcreek Paramedic Service wants to make sure you have all the tools to start your summer off right! These simple tips will have you prepared for the long summer days ahead and hopefully keep you healthy all summer long! • Stay Hydrated: Senior Citizens are more susceptible to dehydration than younger generations. As you age, your body loses the ability to conserve water. This may cause your body to have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes and become less aware of thirst. Talk to your Doctor: Check with your doctor to make sure any medications you are on won’t be affected by high temperatures. Some medications are less effective if stored above room temperature (above 78 degrees Fahrenheit). Stay in touch: You should let friends and family know you’ll be outside for an extended period of time, even if the activity is not intense. Meet your Neighbors: Get to know those who live around you, learn a bit about them and their schedules. An extra set of hands and eyes can be a great help on occasion. Know who to call: Prepare a list of emergency phone numbers and place them in an area easily accessible. In case of an emergency the right person/agency can be called quickly preventing any medical problems from getting worse. Wear the right stuff: Everyone should dress appropriate for the weather. Natural fabrics, like cotton, are cooler then synthetic fibers. Light colored, loose-fitting clothing helps keep you cool and comfortable as the temperatures rise. Protect your eyes with sunglasses to preserve vision and avoid headaches. Sun block is an essential tool when spending any time outdoors. Exercise Smart: It is important to keep track of the time you spend outside in the heat. Consider getting outdoors to enjoy your activities earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not at its peak. Know the risks of Heat Stroke: Being particularly cautious about high body temperatures, a condition known as hyperthermia, is very important. Heat stroke can be life threatening, knowing the signs can save your life. Seek medical attention immediately is you or anyone around you is experiencing the following symptoms: Change is behavior, such as acting confused or agitated; body temperature greater than 104 degrees; dry, flushed skin; nausea and vomiting, headache; heavy breathing or rapid pulse; not showing signs of sweating in elevated temperatures; fainting. If you follow these tips, you can plan for an enjoyable and fun summer at any age!
