ow can we keep our favorite players, role models, and icons
competing and excelling in what they love to do? Today’s modern
science of hyperbaric therapy allows athletes of every level to
recover faster, perform sharper and train longer. From Jordan Spieth
in the PGA, to virtually all athletes of the NFL, people are benefiting
from the use of hyperbaric therapy in their recovery of injury, as well as
taking their performance to the next level.
Certified by the American Chiropractic Board of Sport Physicians
and registered in the ACR for concussion management, as well as
certified and registered with the International Hyperbaric Association,
Dr. Mizuba continues to bring new treatment protocols to the table
of options available to benefit patients. It is a variety of treatment
modalities, protocols, and continuing of education that no one office
can match. Dr. Mizuba has continued to work for local, professional and
amateur sports teams and individuals. He is working for the Professional
Golfers Tour this summer, including as chiropractor and hyperbaric
doctor at the U.S. Open in Oakmont, PA.
To briefly explain hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Dr. Mizuba states that
this therapy is used in professional sports for faster recovery from
injury, including concussions, and to extend many athletes’ professional
careers. Hyperbaric therapy involves being in a chamber, breathing
oxygen at a greater atmospheric pressure than one atmosphere.
Although oxygen performs many roles in the body, its primary role is
usage in the energy cycles of the cell. By using the hyperbaric chamber,
there can be a significant increase in the amount of oxygen delivered
to the cells in the body. By increasing the atmospheric pressure in the
chamber, the partial pressure exerted on oxygen that is breathed in is
also increased; therefore, the oxygen dissolves into the blood, plasma
and other waterborne fluids in the body—and not just the red blood
cells! This is extremely significant because water and gas are dissolved
within the body and then are able to cross the semi-permeable
membrane via osmosis and diffusion. Since the body is approximately
70 percent water and every cell literally bathes in water, we use simple
physics to deliver oxygen to every tissue in the body…and our body
does the rest!

that are considered “on label.” However, science has been furthering
the uses of hyperbaric therapy in the United States as well as several
countries around the world for other purposes that are considered “off
label.” Whatever the reason for using hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we
can agree that oxygen is critical for the survival of each cell in the
body. An increase of oxygen delivered to the cells under pressure has
many benefits. Clinical studies of hyperbaric therapy have observed
benefits such as decreased swelling and inflammation of acute injuries
and chronic conditions, faster regeneration of injured tissues and
decreased healing time of bones, ligaments and muscles. Many
individuals benefit in areas including traumatic and ischemic brain
injuries such as concussions. Research has shown that hyperbaric
therapy can reduce fatigue from acute and chronic inadequate oxygen
supply to the cells and tissues of the body, in conditions such as
strokes. Amazing changes have been demonstrated in SPECT brain
scans measuring brain activity and blood flow after receiving
hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Dr. Rossignol, MD, of UC Irvine, states, “You
get increased oxygenation, decreased swelling, and decreased
inflammation, all from one treatment.”
Teams and individuals of amateur and professional sports are
seeking the hyperbaric treatments in private, away from all of the
endorsements and sponsorship funding. It is these individuals—
understanding the benefit, as well as the impeccable safety record,
of hyperbaric therapy—who seek to reap the short- and long-range
benefits.
