Helping Individuals With Disabilities Achieve Their Goals

“ Service Coordination Unlimited has been a tremendous help to my son and family . They continue to provide quality resources and support .”

Service Coordination Unlimited , Inc . ( SCU ), an agency that provides service and supports coordination for people with physical disabilities , intellectual / developmental disabilities , and autism plus older adults , is setting itself apart through a multifaceted approach that prioritizes individual needs and fosters meaningful community integration .

SCU emphasizes genuine person-centered planning where individuals , along with their family or team , are the decisionmakers . This approach allows individuals to have greater control over their support plans and the allocation of their budget , which aligns with the growing emphasis on consumer choice and empowerment .
The supports coordinators of SCU ’ s Office of Developmental Programs ( ODP ) locate , coordinate and monitor participants ’ services in both the home and community . They are there to help the participants achieve their desired outcomes and attain the life that they envision for themselves .
Cait Barton , SCU ’ s ODP director , emphasizes the need for individualized support plans , recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach rarely suffices . Supports coordinators must develop needsbased practices tailored to participant circumstances .
Barton recalls a situation where an interdisciplinary team was crucial for a young participant to remain safely
“ Being a supports coordinator inspires change , advocacy , and growth within myself and participants . It creates an atmosphere of independence , choice , and freedom , which many of my participants strive for in their everyday lives ." at home . The team was able to justify the need for a higher tier of waiver , giving the participant and family the ability to have in-home support staff and respite — preventing parent burnout while allowing the participant to thrive within the family unit , demonstrating the importance of maintaining healthy parentchild relationships that are not exclusively service based .
CEO Matt Perkins says that the goal is to have participants live where they want to live , without compromising their health and safety or the health and safety of others . The coordinators are there to help facilitate county processes and advocate for participant needs . This dedication translates to better outcomes for individuals and a more fulfilling work experience for SCU staff .
