ANSWER :
With 23,107 visitors to the Millfair Compost Center in 2021 , residents and landscapers were able to divert the following from the Lakeview Landfill . 5,670 cubic yards of leaves ( 1,417.5 Tons ) 17,785.5 cubic yards of brush ( 4,446.4 Tons ) TOTAL – 23,455.5 cubic yards of leaf / brush organics ( 5,863.9 Tons )
Composting is recycling in its truest form . From the brush and leaf material collected last year , the Millfair Compost Center was able to process and distribute 6,641.0 cubic yards of product back into the community .
According to the Environmental Protection Agency , composting has many benefits ! Enriches soil , helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests . Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers . Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus , a rich nutrient-filled material . Reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers your carbon footprint .
