Amongst the oldest schools for girls in the United States , SEM is an independent boarding and day school offering education for girls since 1851 . The promise of SEM is to develop the personal and intellectual growth of each girl as they realize their remarkable future .
Situated in a historic neighborhood in Buffalo , NY , SEM offers students wonderful opportunities just steps from campus . From world-renowned art galleries to Niagara Falls , western New York provides an ideal backdrop for experiential learning and abundant opportunities for just having fun .
SEM is a short 1.5-hour drive from Erie , giving students the option to board full time or just during the week , returning home on the weekends to see family and friends . Students do not live in impersonal boarding accommodations ; instead , they are spread across four historic Buffalo homes that surround the campus — linked by a central courtyard attached to the school — each with a houseparent , most commonly a faculty member . The residential program has hosted students from all corners of the world , most recently Germany , China , South Korea , Mexico and France .
With an average class size of 10 , personal attention is the hallmark of a SEM education . Offering 19 AP classes , more than 25 student-run clubs , 16 athletic teams , and incredible theater and arts programming , options for SEM students abound . It is within this small environment that SEM students develop the skills and passions that lead them to success in college and beyond . The most recent graduating class was awarded scholarships to esteemed institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Wellesley College , and Amherst College .
SEM supports these students through SEMFlex , a program tailored to students looking for outstanding academic programming with the flexibility to pursue their goals outside of the classroom . This groundbreaking initiative provides support for students to complete their work remotely , while competing or traveling for special interests such as equestrian , music , figure skating and dance .
