lost both short games. Larry was frustrated, but he challenged the athletes to give their best effort. The team was seeded in a challenging division and went on to play four close, regular length games over the next two days. Although they lost each game, Larry was proud of the fact that his athletes gave it their all, and he repeatedly let them know that they did their best.
“ When I saw them walking around the cafeteria and athlete village with their chests out, and smiling like they had won gold medals, I couldn’ t have been prouder,” Larry said.“ Learning about the true nature of sport happens easily when you are around Special Olympians.”
For anyone considering volunteering, Larry’ s advice is to focus on the athletes. He encourages volunteers to keep athletes’ physical and emotional well-being at the center of everything they do.
“ There will be lots of challenges,” Larry said,“ but seeing them improve and love what they are doing will always make it worthwhile.”
At this year’ s Summer Games, Larry’ s team played a good team and barely beat them.“ I went over to the players of the other team who were upset and dejected,” said Larry.“ I told them they were the best team we had played, and not to give up. Believe in themselves. I had the honor to congratulate them later holding their gold medals.”
After four decades of volunteering, Larry says the reason he continues to return year after year is“ the pure joy of the athletes.” His commitment is a powerful reminder of how being a volunteer with Special Olympics can change lives.
