Q & A WITH MILLFAIR ’ S NEW FOREMAN

ARE THERE BUGS OR ODORS IN COMPOST ?
JIMMY - Actually , a healthy compost pile typically hosts a variety of insects and other organisms that contribute to the decomposition process . Good bugs play critical roles in composting by accelerating the breakdown of organic matter , improving soil structure , and enhancing nutrient availability in the resulting compost . Their presence is a sign of a healthy and active composting process .

My team ensures proper aeration and turning of compost piles to promote aerobic decomposition using the straddle windrow turner , which reduces odor . The compost center staff also routinely monitors the compost and mulch piles for signs of odor issues or unwanted pest or wildlife activity . illcreek

WHAT ARE THE OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING ?
JIMMY - Mulch acts as a barrier in landscaping , reducing evaporation from the soil surface . This helps to maintain soil moisture levels , especially during hot and dry periods , reducing the need for frequent watering .
A layer of mulch prevents sunlight from reaching weed seeds , inhibiting their germination and growth . Mulch insulates the soil , keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter . This moderates temperature fluctuations , which can benefit plant root systems . As organic mulches break down over time , they contribute organic matter to the soil .
Compost is rich in organic matter and nutrients essential for plant growth ( nitrogen , phosphorus , and potassium ). Adding compost improves soil fertility and enhances plant health . Compost helps to improve soil texture , making it easier for roots to penetrate and access water and nutrients . It also improves soil aeration and drainage .
Compost contains beneficial microorganisms that contribute to soil health by breaking down organic matter and making nutrients available to plants . By improving soil structure and increasing water retention , compost can help reduce erosion caused by wind and water .
