The enduring legacy of Griswold cast iron cookware is the story of an Erie success , with an interesting chapter about the mysterious Aunt Ellen .
Griswold Manufacturing produced all sorts of products , most notably cast iron cookware , from 1865 to 1957 in Erie . Though operations ceased more than 60 years ago , the cast iron pots and pans are prized collectibles , commanding thousands of dollars for each piece . Although some sources list the top prices to be nearly $ 4,000 , there was recently a rare , Tite-Top Dutch Oven listed on Etsy at a whopping $ 12,500 !
Crazed collectible impulses aside , the cookware is durable and top of the line , with many buyers using their Griswold for everyday use . The company did have its competitors , though . Lodge Manufacturing launched in 1896 in Pittsburg , Tennessee , and continues to make cookware today . However , many chefs prefer Griswold to Lodge because it ’ s thinner , lighter and smoother than modern cookware , with a texture like glass .
