ERIE AS A NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY
The Biden Harris Administration announced that the Department of Commerce ' s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) is considering making a section of Lake Erie off Erie County a National Marine Sanctuary . NOAA states that , " A sanctuary designation would recognize the national significance of the area ’ s maritime history and cultural resources , as well as expand upon existing local and state efforts to create educational , scientific and recreational opportunities for visitors , residents , teachers and students ."
Other national marine sanctuary locations include The Florida Keys , Thunder Bay , Olympic Coast , Monterey Bay and eleven other locations nationally .
Public comment was taken during a series of meetings and electronically through mid-July . The proposed Lake Erie Quadrangle National Marine Sanctuary is being considered through 2026 . It is part of the Biden Administrations , " Invest in American " agenda which offers 1 billion dollars to help secure clean water for the Great Lakes and clean-up environmentally impacted areas .
