Letter from
the Supervisors
Other than the occasional deluge, overall, our summer was a beauty… lots of sunshine, warm
days and cool nights. We hope you were able to enjoy some of what our area has to offer. With
autumn around the corner, cooling temperatures, the changing leaves, cider and football, there’s
still plenty to do. Get out and experience our great community.
In case you missed it (and not many did), the Millcreek 4th of July Parade
was another big success. Huge crowds lined both sides of 12th Street
for the mile long event. Later on the 4th, a spectacular fireworks display
exploded in the skies near Yorktown Centre. We extend our appreciation to
the Parade Committee and the sponsors of the fireworks.
With fall approaching, it’s a good time to consider planting a tree or two.
This issue of In Millcreek includes some helpful tips on tree selection and
proper planting.
Our Public Services Department is again providing information on driver safety
classes, property tax/rent rebates along with an article on the flu vaccine program.
This issue provides important information from the Millcreek Recycling Department
concerning leaf collection, the “Pay as You Throw” option and the International Coastal Cleanup.
There is also valuable information from the Millcreek Police and Emergency Management in this
issue of In Millcreek, concerning school bus safety and storm preparedness.
Have a safe and enjoyable season.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL 4th OF JULY IN MILLCREEK
July 4th is a time to celebrate our
independence and honor those who fought
to secure it. For 52 years, the Millcreek
Parade has entertained thousands of
residents. This year was no exception. The
parade route on West 12th Street from
Marshall Drive to Ford Avenue was lined with
red, white and blue clad attendees along
with excited young faces anxiously awaiting
some candy to be handed their way. This
year’s parade was one of the highest
attended with an estimate of over 30,000
people enjoying the beautiful weather and
patriotic festivities.
Over the years, fireworks have been an
integral part of celebrations held at various
locations in the Erie area. Last year, residents
were fortunate enough to be rewarded with
a spectacular fireworks show right here in
Millcreek Township. Township Officials
wanted to continue the tradition with the
hope of making it an annual event. The plan
was to make it a community effort by
including sponsors from around the area.
This year after making a few phone calls,
Millcreek was able to secure Highmark as a
primary sponsor, along with Giant Eagle and
Baldwin Brothers also stepping up to the
plate as sponsors. Their generosity defrayed
the cost of the fireworks.
This event was held at the MYAA Sports
Field located at West 15th Street &
Pittsburgh Avenue. It couldn’t have run
smoothly without the assistance of West
Lake Fire Department, Millcreek Police
Department, and the Office of Fire
Prevention. Parking was plentiful thanks to
the generosity of the West Erie Plaza, Colony
Plaza, Yorktown Center, Big Lots, and Iron
Oxygen Fitness allowing residents a
convenient place to park and view the
awesome show.
According to Supervisor John Groh,
“Fireworks were not in Millcreek Township’s
budget. Through generous sponsors and
community support, we were able to help
facilitate the event, giving residents a
spectacular ending to their 4th of July!”
Response to the fireworks was
overwhelming. Many commented on the
fantastic display with little traffic congestion.
Many more indicated that they wanted to
see the show continue in the future.
Millcreek Supervisors and other Township
Officials agree and are already planning next
year’s Independence Day celebration.
