Y-Co alum, that song is “My Heart Sings” by Paul Anka—and for
those who attended after 1965, the Mel Carter version.
The story behind the different version is that disc jockey Jim
Treiber wore out the Paul Anka record, searched unsuccessfully for a
new one, and was forced to settle for the Mel Carter version.
At the end of each dance, right before midnight, with the lights low
and the crystal ball slowly spinning above, “My Heart Sings” would
play. Pora says it was the most romantic song at the time and a perfect
cheek-to-cheeker to end the night.
The memorial dance in October is open to YMCA and non-YMCA
members. Anyone who wants to experience/remember what it was
like at a dance in the ‘50s and ‘60s should plan to attend. Costumes
are encouraged but not required.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. It is “bring your
own” drinks and snacks. DJ John will be spinning the songs of the era
for dancing the twist, mashed potato, and jitterbug and, of course, he
will end the night with “My Heart Sings.”
Tickets are available for purchase at all the YMCA Erie
locations. Proceeds benefit the YMCA annual campaign to support
programming. n
