Injuries caused by sports-related activities are a substantial concern among players, coaches and parents alike. As pain and inflammation play primary roles with respect to recovery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy( HBOT) has been shown to reduce inflammation, pain, and reduce swelling. Five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning is no stranger to injury, and he has benefited from usage of hyperbarics during his 18 seasons in the NFL. Joe Namath, another NFL Hall of Famer, uses hyperbarics to ameliorate the effects of multiple concussions sustained from years of play. He has publicly been an advocate of hyperbarics, showing through his brain scans the new blood vessel growth to the left side of his brain following several sessions of hyperbarics.

Hyperbarics is not just good science, but also used in the practical world by athletes to accelerate healing, and to prolong careers. Research has demonstrated stem cell production and availability after using hyperbarics. The stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into numerous different cell types and serve as the body’ s primary internal repair system. By increasing blood plasma oxygen levels, bone-derived stem cells were shown to proliferate. This evidence plays a key role in regenerative medicine, as the increased number of stem cells in the body have the ability to provide enhanced and accelerated repair to athletic injury.
In childhood we become familiar with visible signs of injury and the changes that take place as these injuries heal. We take the signs for granted, even accepting that the pain serves a useful purpose. An ankle sprain hurts enough to keep us from putting weight on the injured leg and damaging it further. Inflammation can continue to occur over a period of time from these injuries, and the inflammatory response can perpetuate throughout the entire body. This response, if left unchecked, can lead to further degradation in a person’ s movement patterns and cause sustained tissue damage, affecting the person / athlete for months, even years.
