PREP THE TEACHER
If your children have IEPs or 504 plans, whether for learning
challenges or gifted/talented services, it’s best to start the year with
prepping the teachers. If possible, try to schedule an informal meeting,
phone call, or just email the homeroom teachers before school starts
so that you can explain your children’s situation. Even discussing
simple things such as seat placement or a child’s attention level can be
addressed early on in the year to prevent a problem later on. Teachers
appreciate a pro-active stance because they want the year to be as
smooth as you do.
Making the transition from summer vacation to school can be a
fun way to bond with your children on many levels and allow them to
have an easier time dealing with a new teacher, classmates, or school.
The time dedicated to this transition can have a huge impact on your
children’s success in school. n
