WHAT’S NEWS IN MCKEESPORT NEARLY $350,000 IN STATE FUNDING FOR MCKEESPORT TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY McKeesport will benefit from the implementation of a traffic safety program and other traffic-related improvements following a $344,000 grant disbursement to the city, announced State Rep. Austin Davis, D-Allegheny. The grant funding is from PennDOT’s Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) program, designed to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where traffic data shows that red-light running is a concern. McKeesport’s ARLE funding will be used to upgrade the traffic signal at the intersection of Versailles Avenue and Evans Street by installing new traffic signal supports, signal heads, pedestrian accommodations, controller assembly, detection, and new ADA curb ramps; create a traffic safety program that would assess the needs of intersections throughout the city where there are large pedestrian and vehicle conflicts, speeding 6 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ issues and sight distance problems; and install accessible pedestrian signals at the intersection of Lysle Boulevard and Coursin Street. “This is great news for the city of McKeesport. Improving traffic and pedestrian safety is key to ensuring the safety of our residents, as well as continuing progress in our revitalization efforts. These funds will help ensure McKeesport is a destination attraction here in the Mon Valley,” Davis said. Funding for the program, as required under state law, is supplied by fines from red-light violations at 30 intersections in Philadelphia. LIVING HISTORY TOUR OF THE MCKEESPORT AND VERSAILLES CEMETERY The McKeesport History and Heritage Center will present its annual Living History Tour of the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery this fall. This is the fifth year for the event. The tour takes place at the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22. An encore performance will be held at the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. This year’s tour features seven new stories and returns three former living history characters in Carl Willig, Mary Cox and G.C. Murphy. Among the new characters this year are Vietnam soldier Norman “Boots” Johnson, artist Arnold Varga and the scintillating story of Mrs. LaRue Soles. Actors dressed in period costume tell the stories, bringing each of these characters to life near the person’s final resting place.
