Kids enjoy annual
fishing derby
M
cKeesport’s annual Kids Fishing
Derby took place at Lake Emilie on
June 8 – drawing nearly 100 kids to
catch everything from small crappies and
sunfish to a near-three-foot carp. This year’s
winners were Caiden Howard Smith with a
35-inch carp and Julie Trainer with a 4.5-inch
sunfish. “It was really great to see all the smiles
on the kids’ faces, not only the winners, but
every kid who had a line in the water,” City
Administrator Tom Maglicco said. “Fishing is
a fun, relaxing sport that anyone can try. Kids
were there with their parents, grandparents
and mentors. Everyone had a great time.” Next
year’s derby is planned for June 13, 2020.
McKeesporters take part in spring cleaning
McKeesport hosted two spring cleaning events designed to help residents clean their own properties as well as public roadways
throughout the city.
The first event was an electronics recycling day on April 27, where volunteers gathered in Renziehausen Park to collect televisions,
miscellaneous electronics, tires, and other hard to recycle items from residents who dropped off their unwanted items.
The second event was a citywide cleanup in which city
residents and volunteers from local businesses adopted
sections of McKeesport for a four-hour cleanup. They walked
city streets in residential and downtown areas to collect trash
and other debris as part of the Great American Cleanup.
