Meals on Wheels Welcomes Local Mayors C ity of Mc Keesport N ews cKeesportt cKeespor The McKeesport Area Meals on Wheels hosted its annual Mayors Day on March 23, inviting officials from McKeesport, White Oak, Port Vue and Duquesne and other areas to take part in one day of community service. They cooked, packaged and delivered roasted pork loin, mashed potatoes, a seasonal vegetable blend, soup and salad. Each day with a cold lunch and hot dinner, the McKeesport Area Meals on Wheels serves 120 elderly and homebound residents of McKeesport, Dravosburg, Port Vue, Versailles, White Oak and parts of West Mifflin and Duquesne. “We provide an important service in the community,” site director Rose Marshall said. “There are a lot of elderly people who depend on our volunteers and the excellent work they do. We are so appreciative to have the mayors here with us to see how hard our volunteers work and to help us get the word out about Meals on Wheels.” To volunteer, call 412-672-1998. McKeesport Celebrates Fair Housing Month with Landlord/Tenant Workshop Recognizing April as Fair Housing Month, the City of McKeesport hosted a landlord/tenant workshop on April 21 at the Palisades. Renters were invited to learn about their rights, and landlords had a chance to brush up on their responsibilities, in terms of fair housing. Both received information about housing opportunities involving Section 8. “In this, the 48th year since the adoption of the Fair Housing Act, the City of McKeesport continues to be committed to identifying fair housing issues in our city,” fair housing officer Angelia Christina said. “One of the ways we do this is by inviting the community, including landlords and their tenants, to workshops such as these.” In a relaxed setting, representatives of the City of McKeesport, McKeesport Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity and Neighborhood Legal spent time with landlords, potential tenants and city homeowners – educating them on their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. They also collected community input on how the city can take meaningful action against discrimination and lack of opportunities for residents. 44 McKeesport Area
