Audubon Society bolsters nature appreciation in Renzie Park

Adding to its successful nature walks and birding programs in Renziehausen Park, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania is working with the City of McKeesport to increase opportunities for nature appreciation in the Mon Valley.

Through an Audubon grant, McKeesport is working with Penn Trails to develop a nature trail through the wooded area above the park’ s existing amenities.
“ Renzie Park is a recreational hub for McKeesport and surrounding communities,” Mayor Mike Cherepko said.“ Thanks to the Audubon Society, we have been able to increase nature-based
opportunities with monthly bird-watching walks, nature hikes, and educational activities.”
Adding to the project of installing a native species garden at the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center in 2024, Audubon recently installed a chimney swift tower with educational signage about this local bird.
“ This chimney swift tower is a wonderful addition to the park, and it sits near the entrance to a future nature trail that is currently in the planning stages,” Cherepko added.
