WHAT ’ S NEWS IN MCKEESPORT
INAUGURAL HERITAGE GOLF CLASSIC A SUCCESS !
The McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center recently hosted its inaugural Heritage Golf Classic golf tournament . After having to cancel in 2020 due to the pandemic , 65 golfers joined in a wonderful day on the links of Youghiogheny Country Club .
Congratulations to the winning team of Lenny Winand , Tom Heveker , Scott Boyd and Keith Grabowski , who shot a -13 , 59 , and won the tournament on the sixth playoff hole over McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko , State Senator Jim Brewster , Ryan Sturgess and Jared Candalore .
The event was a major success thanks to all who were involved . That included sponsors that generously donated , countless organizations that provided items for the silent auction , all the golfers and the individuals who attended the dinner .
Appreciation also goes to the staff at Youghiogheny , and the volunteers , staff and board members of the History & Heritage Center whose hard work over the last few months and on the day made the event a success .
Every penny earned will go directly back into the center , supporting its mission to preserve and present our area ’ s history .
The McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center looks forward to an even bigger event next year !
The Salvation Army Western PA Division recently launched three new Community Gardens through its Feeding Families for Life program , which aims to make fresh , healthy food more accessible for low-income families in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and " food deserts ." The gardens , funded by The Heinz Endowments , are located at The Salvation Army ’ s McKeesport , Homewood , and Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Centers .
“ Our brand-new Community Gardens are growing not only fresh vegetables for the individuals and families we serve , but also growing a new perspective on easy and affordable access to nutritious options ,” says Major Gregory Hartshorn , Divisional Commander , The Salvation Army Western PA Division .
The Salvation Army ’ s Feeding Families for Life : Fighting Hunger the Healthy Way initiative is more than a handout or an occasional hot meal ; it ’ s a fresh perspective on reducing hunger in healthy ways .

THE SALVATION ARMY LAUNCHES NEW MCKEESPORT COMMUNITY GARDEN AND TWO OTHERS THROUGH ‘ FEEDING FAMILIES FOR LIFE ’ PROGRAM
Through this program , the people served gain access to :
• fresh produce , lean proteins , and other healthy meal options that are regularly available in the food pantries , soup kitchens and feedings during programs .
• education on how to budget and afford healthy food choices for everyday meal planning .
In addition to increasing access to fresh produce for local communities , the Community Gardens will also provide visitors with recipe cards and meal ideas for the veggies produced , making meal planning even easier for families .
Feeding Families for Life considers the whole family , holistically inspiring and empowering each generation to not only feel full , but to also feel — and do — better . The goal of the initiative is to empower those served to be healthier by exposure to more wholesome food choices . n
