WHAT’S NEWS IN MARS AREA RESIDENTS STAR IN LUTHERAN SENIORLIFE OVERBROOK POINTE 5TH ANNIVERSARY Lutheran SeniorLife Overbrook Pointe residents welcomed the community to its 5th Anniversary Celebration at the independent living apartment complex at St. John Community. More than 50 community members joined in as five residents, who have lived at Overbrook since it opened, were recognized. A vinyl record spin featuring songs of the ’50s and ’60s and artwork created by residents were special highlights of the celebration. The independent living apartments complete the St. John Continuing Care Retirement Community offerings, which also include RoseCrest Assisted Living and St. John Specialty Care Center. JUNIOR MENDELSSOHN CHOIR OF PITTSBURGH PRESENTS ‘DREAMS AND DANCES’ On Sunday, Nov. 18, the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (JMCP) will present its fall concert— Dreams and Dances—at Third Presbyterian Church. The nearly 50 young 6 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ singers of the choir will be joined by guest musicians the Kassia Ensemble as they present a program of dreamlike choral music featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s “Beatus Vir” RV 598, Gwyneth Walker’s “Dreams and Dances,” and music by Abbie Betinis, Thomas Morley, Rosephayne Powell and Sarah Quartel. The JMCP is the only program of its kind in the region and one of the country’s few vocal training programs for youth managed by a symphonic choir. Founded in 1986 to serve singers too old to perform with children’s choirs and too young to perform with adult choruses, JMCP enables talented students in grades 9 through 12 to train with accomplished professional singers and music educators. Scholarships ensure that no student is denied acceptance for financial reasons. “These young singers are exceptionally engaged and motivated,” says Caron Daley, music director of the JMCP. “They’re game to tackle any challenge, and their enthusiasm and skill make for exciting concerts. We are very proud to share their work with the community.” Many former JMCP members have gone on to make careers in music, and many now sing as adults in the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (MCP), one of the most celebrated choirs in the country. The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Plum Creek Chamber Orchestra and the MCP. This season’s JMCP consists of 40 singers representing 27 schools. In addition to its fall concert, the group will be performing with the MCP in “Let My People Go: A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad” on Feb. 15, 2019.
