SIXTH-GRADERS COMPETE IN ACADEMIC GAMES
Four Mars Area Centennial School sixthgraders competed in the Academic Games League of America ( AGLOA ) Presidents academic competition , held Jan . 10 at Slippery Rock University .
Sixth-graders Everly Henderson , Emma Johnston , Jackie Li and Mary Rhenish scored a combined 200 points in the question and response game , which develops students ’ understanding of the personalities , historical contexts , political decisions , and other events surrounding Presidents of the United States .

SENIORS PLACE IN WEST VIEW WATER VIDEO CONTEST
Two Mars Area High School students took the top spots in the sixth annual West View Water Authority High School Video / Photo Contest .
Senior Lauren Karg earned first place and a $ 1,000 award for her video , which discusses the detrimental effects of plastic on the environment , including a risk to wildlife and the threat of microplastics .
Senior Kaitlyn Metzger received second place and a $ 750 award for her video , which focuses on topics such as overconsumption and pollution as well as ways to achieve a more sustainable society through the use of safer alternatives to commonly used materials and making positive contributions to the environment .
The contest challenged high school students to create videos educating and informing the public on different topics related to the environment , school spirit , or community service . All winning videos will be featured on the authority ’ s website , westviewwater . org .

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS COMPETE IN ACADEMIC GAMES
Several Mars Area School District students competed in the Academic Games League of America ( AGLOA ) LinguiSHTIK academic competition , held Dec . 14 at Slippery Rock University .
In the Grades 3-4 Division , two fourth grade teams earned second and third place overall . In the Grades 5-6 Division , one fifth grade team took fifth place overall . Fourth-grader Jack Baumgartel went undefeated throughout the competition .

Demetris , Asher Detore , Lucy Harrison , Bennett Kreit , Landon Lewis , Ashrith Muppala , Ellie Spaulding , Adalyn Stuber and Max Veneziano ; and , third-graders Noah Bergdahl , Kendall Fonzi , Jane Lyons , Eleanor McCauley , Angelo Navari , Everly Northrop , Olivia Evans and Jessica Li .
LinguiSHTIK , which challenges students in grammar , vocabulary , spelling , and writing skills , asks players to compose sentences with proper grammar application and richer vocabulary . The competition , open to students in Grade 4-12 , brings together students from schools Butler , Lawrence and Mercer counties through Midwestern Intermediate IV .
